Conor McGregor's next fight: UFC star's coach suggests return date as Dana White lists potential opponents

Conor McGregor is due to begin proper MMA training soon as he eyes a return to the UFC Octagon later this year, it has emerged.

Coach John Kavanagh claims The Notorious is now "physically fully recovered" from the horrific leg break he suffered in defeat to Dustin Poirier last year and is "ready to get back to that serious phase of training".

The 33-year-old was left on the canvas in agony back in July in what was his second defeat on the spin.

There's no shortage of fighters joining the queue to fight him, with Nate Diaz, Jake Paul, Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway all keen to get their hands on McGregor.

McGregor still has two fights left on his contract, and UFC boss Dana White hinted the Irishman is most likely to face off against Diaz in a mouth-watering trilogy next.

But he insists he will only make a plan with McGregor once he is in full training for a return.

He told ESPN: "I don't know if Conor will be back this summer.

"That's all going to depend on how Conor's leg heals and a million other things that could happen between now and summer.

"So...to speculate is even stupid. I just stopped doing that.

"When Conor McGregor calls me and says, 'I'm ready to go full bore and start training a hundred percent', then we start talking about what's possible for Conor."

Coach Kavanagh mirrored White's views and claimed the Diaz fight would be a 'fan favourite'.

He told Fox Sports: "The physical stage of recovery is pretty much complete now, you have seen the posts [online].

"He has been enjoying himself over Christmas but he is ready to get back to that serious phase of training and not enjoy the good life and get ready for another contest.

"I'm just excited to see him back in there. It is always a big occasion, there isn't much like a McGregor fight week.

"It doesn't really matter; you say any name and it's exciting, but probably the Diaz trilogy would be a fan favourite. Let's just get him back healthy, back ready and back competing.

"He has won a couple of belts and earned all the money. He has achieved all those targets and exceeded them. At this stage, it's all about exciting fights.

"So whether it's Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway, or Nate Diaz, it's just about getting back to training and getting back to competing."

Kavanagh also quashed rumours McGregor is too big to make lightweight again.

The Dubliner is sporting a stocky frame as he prepares to begin training, but a three stone weight cut to the 10st 8lbs lightweight limit will not be a problem, according to Kavanagh.

He explained: "I don't think it will be all that difficult to be honest. He has made some pretty dramatic weight cuts in the past.

"155lbs seems to suit his frame, at the moment yeah light-heavyweight he is more suited towards but by the summertime when he is ready to return, the weight will be back down again."

Kavanagh and White were speaking as Youtuber Jake Paul claimed he wanted to fight McGregor in Ireland.

The 25-year-old said: "I want to fight [Conor] McGregor, I will fight him in a boxing ring in Ireland.

"This is partially how the journey [in boxing] started.

"I made up my mind that I was going to get a fight with McGregor and win it and that is what motivated me to jump into this boxing career.

"I will beat him, people are seeing how serious I am being about this and are changing the way they think about it."

McGregor seems to be hellbent on avenging his defeat to Dustin Poirier, but the American recently poured cold water on the prospect of the pair meeting for a fourth time.

When asked on Twitter if he'd fight McGregor again, Poirier told a fan: "Probably not".

But when someone suggested a boxing bout between the pair, he replied: "Book it."
