In a development recently occurred involving UFC star Conor McGregor being held responsible, in a civil assault lawsuit connected to an incident that took place in Dublin in December 2018. The verdict was determined by the jury at the Dublin High Court on Friday instructing McGregor to compensate €248,603 (equivalent to, about $258,440 dollars ) to the plaintiff named Nikita Hand.

The lawsuit drew attention from both MMA enthusiasts and legal professionals as it revolved around claims of misconduct at the penthouse suite of the Beacon Hotel, in Sandyford Dublin on December 9th 2018. Hand claimed that McGregor tried to coerce her into engaging in acts following a night spent together.
During the court proceedings that started on November 5th, 2024 Hand emotionally recounted the alleged assault with detail. She stated that McGregor had endangered her life and subjected her to chokeholds. Hands legal representatives brought forth testimony, from a doctor and a psychologist to back up her assertions.
McGregor strongly refuted the allegations when he testified on November 13th in court. The ex-UFC champion of two weight classes claimed that any contact, with Hand was consensual and characterized their meeting as “sporty ” and “active”. During the trial, McGregor persistently argued that Hands’ claims were untrue.
The panel of eight women and four men spent six hours discussing before coming to their conclusion. It’s interesting to mention that Irish legislation follows a standard, similar to that of the U.S., where a civil case only needs to be proven more likely, than not for the jury to support the claim.
After the trial outcome was revealed McGregor displayed disappointment while exiting the courthouse. Despite being surrounded by media personnel he decided to remain silent. Conversely Hand took the opportunity to speak to journalists outside the Dublin courthouse. She conveyed her appreciation, for the backing and encouragement extended to her during the proceedings.
“In a written statement provided by Hand ” she mentioned, “To all those who have experienced assault I wish that sharing my story can serve as a reminder that when fear grips you tightly speak out. Your voice matters,. Continue to advocate for fairness.” Furthermore, she highlighted the effect this incident had on both her and her family stating that while the memory will always be, with her she is now striving to progress ”
The situation has sparked discussions, about how sexual assault accusations are dealt with in known cases. It is important to mention that after a two-year inquiry, into the matter McGregor was neither officially charged with a crime nor taken to court.
McGregor is still a known name, in the UFC. Hasn’t fought since July 2021 when he got injured during a match with Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. The 36-year-old fighter has been active, on social media lately discussing his plans to challenge the decision.
McGregor took to X, in a now-deleted post, to express his intention to appeal the court ruling concerning his case:
I will be appealing today’s decision. The judge’s instruction and the modest award given was for assault, not for aggravated or exemplary damages.
