Conor Gallagher handed World Cup boost as England boss vouches for Chelsea star to Southgate

Conor Gallagher has been handed a huge boost in the battle to secure an England call-up by Gareth Southgate ahead of the Qatar World Cup. The 22-year-old midfielder impressed for the Three Lions' Under-21s side, scoring the match-winning goal in a 3-1 victory over Germany.

Gallagher, who sees his contract at Stamford Bridge expire in 2025, featured in each of England's friendlies against Italy and Germany, directly contributing towards two goals. He flourished in an advanced role in either of the clashes, just as he did while on loan at Crystal Palace last season.

England Under-21s head coach Lee Carsley believes that Gallagher's qualities could be of use to Southgate at the World Cup. Speaking to Sky Sports following the young Three Lions' win over Germany, the 48-year-old insisted that it is not too late for the Chelsea star to earn a place in the squad which will travel to Qatar.

Carsley added that he will speak to Southgate and Steve Holland about all his players regarding a seat on the plane. He said: "Very enthusiastic every day, Conor.

"Approaches every game and every training session with 100% focus and commitment. It was obviously good having him back but you can see that he's really improved; the way he's receiving the ball, receives it really smoothly, gets into really good goal-scoring positions and obviously athletically he's outstanding.

"He's been brilliant for us. Yeah I'll speak to Gareth and Steve about all of the players. I think it's important that they're all given the opportunity at their clubs now going back and putting themselves in the window to get selected."

Gallagher has featured six times for Chelsea so far this season, averaging just under 28 minutes per appearance. The Cobham graduate endured a rocky start to the season under Thomas Tuchel but, with Graham Potter now at the helm, he can be confident that the former Brighton boss will steer him in the right direction in his development.
