Congress appoints new chief for Punjab

Nearly a month after Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Navjot Singh Sidhu quit following the party’s disastrous debacle in the State Assembly elections, the Congress appointed Amarinder Singh Brar as its State chief.

Mr. Brar was Transport Minister in the previous dispensation and won in the recent polls from the Gidderbaha Assembly constituency.

The Congress also settled the question of the Congress Legislative Party chief by appointing former Rajya Sabha MP Pratap Singh Bajwa to the post.

None of leaders from the previous regime, including Sunil Jhakar, who was also contender for both the Chief Minister’s chair and the State chief's position, was given any post.

Mr. Sidhu, who was made president on July 18, 2021, just months before the election, resigned on March 16, six days after the results.
