The Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has surpassed the 2018 to 2020 Kivu epidemic in total cases, making it the largest Ebola outbreak ever recorded outside the 2014 to 2016 West Africa epidemic. World Health Organization data current through July 30 put the toll at 3,605 confirmed cases and 1,587 deaths, a crude case fatality ratio of 44%.
The outbreak took 76 days to pass a case total that Kivu reached over 23 months. The last week of July was the worst yet recorded, with 567 cases and 296 deaths reported in a single epidemiological week, roughly 42 deaths a day.
