Concerns of risk to school route with six 'attractive' apartments planned

Plans for six “attractive” apartments have sparked concerns about the potential risk to children walking to a nearby school.

The six flats modelled after “villas” could be built on Caldy Road in West Kirby if Wirral Council decided to approve the application on December 15.

To build the new property, Chester-based Blueoak Estates will be knocking down the existing building on the site. The plans involve parking spaces at the front and a garden space at the back.

Developers argue it will make “a positive impact on the supply of new, energy efficient housing in the area and will make the most efficient use of the site.

“The site is in a highly sustainable location with good pedestrian / cycle / public transport access to places of work, education, and recreation. It is also well connected in terms of access to the rail and highways networks.”

Ten people have written letters opposing the application as well as a petition signed by 32 people though there is some crossover between both according to the council. No councillors have commented on the application.

Those concerned say the area “suffers from excessive on-road parking which would be exacerbated by another development of apartments.” There are also concerns vehicles crossing the pavement could put children at risk on the way to school.

They also argue the loss of the front garden would be “detrimental to the character of the area and erode the biodiversity value of the site.

The application has been recommended for approval by council officers for the council’s planning committee with the condition no development can take place until a plan for how the demolition will take place is approved by the council.

A report said: “The proposed scheme would not result in a detrimental change in the character of the area and would not result in significant harm to the living conditions at neighbouring properties.

“The scheme would not result in harm to highway safety and nor would it have a serve impact on the operation of the highway network.”
