Concerned Edinburgh resident shares footage of 'dangerous trench' outside pub

Concerns have been raised after footage appears to show shoddy surfacing work on a public pavement in Leith.

Edinburgh Disgraces, an anonymous Twitter channel that looks to highlight issues related to Edinburgh City Council management such as roads, walkways and overflowing bins, shared a video with Edinburgh that shows a “deep trench” left in the tarmac which “constitutes a trip hazard.”

They added that their video shows fragments of tactile paving stones in the middle of the pavement which they say could be dangerous for visually impaired pedestrians.

The video was taken just outside of the Foot of the Walk pub in the heart of Leith and Edinburgh Disgraces say that council contractors are responsible for the “bodged” pavement.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, they said: “The film was taken just outside of the Foot of the Walk pub.

“The council contractors have left a deep trench like area of tarmac without paving with at least an inch depth all round.

“This constitutes a trip hazard and there are many more in the area.

“The remnants of tactile paving stones are now in the middle of the pavement which will be very confusing for pedestrians with visual impairment as they will believe they are at a crossing when they are not.

“There seem to be no standards for managing the sites in relation to pedestrian safety.

“This is another bodged Trams project.”

In the short video, several elements of the pathway look to be unfinished with pavement stones sticking up from black tarmac which could cause people to trip over.

There is also a square of tactile slabs in the middle of the walkway which could cause confusion for those with sight issues.

Cllr Scott Arthur, transport convener for the council, said: “These are temporary repairs to enable as much of the road and footpath works to be cleared from Leith Walk over the Christmas and New Year period.

“Nonetheless, they appear not to meet the standard the Council would expect. The Council will be investigating this and ensure the area is safe.”
