A Nottingham MP said more people could turn to crime so they can find shelter and food in prison. Nadia Whittome, the Labour MP for Nottingham East, has shared her concerns after a recent visit to HMP Nottingham.
She said the number of inmates is anticipated to grow over winter as people would "deliberately" commit crime so they can be housed and fed in prison. On top of this, she also shared that the prison has faced challenges linked to staff shortages and budgetary issues.
In a statement, Ms Whittome added: "I recently visited HMP Nottingham where I met with staff and learnt more about the challenges they face, from staff shortages to budgetary pressures, and the impact this has on prisoners. It was particularly concerning to hear that over winter, the prison is anticipating the number of inmates who have deliberately committed crime in order to be housed and fed to grow."
