Concern as 'fireworks thrown at people' and 'cars jumped on' in the Holyland

Holyland residents have raised concerns after "fireworks were thrown at passers-by" during a night of anti-social behaviour.

Concerned father Kenny, who lives in the area with his young family, said that a number of fireworks were thrown at people on Rugby Avenue at around 10pm on Tuesday night, putting those in the area at risk.

Speaking to Belfast Live, he said that those throwing the fireworks showed "a complete disregard" for everyone living in the area and that the fireworks could have easily injured someone or caused a fire.

He said that over the past few weeks, the fire service have been called to the area on a number of occasions in order to deal with bin fires.

He said: "For the past few weeks we have been dealing with anti-social behaviour in the area with bins being set on fire, loud partying and even people urinating on the street.

"On Tuesday night there were further problems where people were jumping up and down on the roofs of cars and throwing fireworks at passers-by on the street.

"This is so dangerous, particularly for the young families who are living in the area because these fireworks could very easily injury someone walking by or the person throwing them. Not to mention the problems that could arise if one got into a bin or ended up underneath a car.

"It shows a complete disregard for everyone who is living in the area, whether that is young families, elderly residents or students and we should not have to deal with this on such a regular basis."

Paula Bradshaw, Alliance MLA for South Belfast, said: “I am beyond frustrated for the law-abiding citizens living in the Holyland area. This latest incident, of the firework within a very tightly packed neighbourhood, will have caused great shock and distress for the more elderly and vulnerable among them.

"Added to this is the public safety aspect: a young person could have been badly injured and it’s long gone time that wreckless behaviour like this stopped, permanently.”

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Police attended the scene following reports of fireworks being thrown and anti-social behaviour in the Rugby Avenue area of south Belfast yesterday evening, Tuesday 11 October. Enquiries are ongoing to identify those responsible."
