Concern as Avian flu detected in wild birds near Nottinghamshire river

Residents across Nottinghamshire are being urged not to touch or pick up dead or sick birds after avian flu was detected in the county. Wild birds near the River Idle in Newington, near Bawtry in Bassetlaw, have tested positive for avian flu.

This flu is not connected to the Covid-19 pandemic, which is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and is not carried in poultry. Wild birds migrating to the UK from mainland Europe during the winter months can carry the disease and this can lead to cases in poultry and other captive birds.

This means it is vital that wild birds do not mix with chickens, ducks, geese or other birds. Nottinghamshire County Council’s Trading Standards team is issuing advice and working with Bassetlaw District Council and other partner agencies to reduce the risk of the spread of the disease.
