Premier League clubs are pushing for the government to offer more support for football on competition law amid fears that Manchester City’s legal challenges could eventually lead to “complete carnage”.
The suggestions have come in discussions over the independent football regulator, as well as City’s case against the Premier League, due to a belief the body’s powers won’t go anywhere near far enough. That is down to what some figures feel is a “doctrinal” adherence to competition law, that can run against sporting requirements, and has been perceived in the legal outcome of an arbitration tribunal from Manchester City’s legal challenge of the Premier League’s previous Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules.
