Company 'interested' in Highland fabrication yard preparing for administration

A HIGHLAND-BASED energy company has reportedly made inquiries into taking over Harland & Wolff's fabrication yard in Lewis.

The Belfast-based shipbuilder Harland & Wolff announced on Monday that it is preparing to go into administration for the second time in five years.

Global Energy Group, who operate the Nigg fabrication yard in the Highlands, is reportedly interested in the Arnish yard.

Harland & Wolff said its administration process would affect its holding company and that it is looking for buyers for its yards in Belfast, Arnish, Methil in Fife and Appledore in Devon.

A spokesperson said: “Global Energy Group have made initial inquiries into the Arnish Yard and look forward to ongoing discussions.”

The energy firm is chaired by businessman Roy MacGregor who also heads up Ross County football club.

The fabrication yard in Arnish is one of the largest employers in Lewis with a workforce of around 150 people.

It recently won a five-year contract to build large subsea structures for the oil and gas industry which was estimated to be the value of around £3 million.
