Community rally together to help Derry man, 21, after leukaemia diagnosis

The Derry people are showing their community spirit once again by rallying together to help the family of a 21-year-old man with cancer.

Odhran Edger, from Creggan, was diagnosed with leukaemia on August 11 and he now has a long road of emergency chemotherapy ahead of him.

The Derry man is only at the beginning of his cancer journey, with at least a four to six-week stay at the City Hospital in Belfast expected in the coming weeks.

Upon hearing the news, the local community has rallied around the young man with a GoFundMe and other fundraisers having already been promoted online.

Ciara Simpson, who is a family friend and set up the GoFundMe page, said: "I’m sure the word has spread about wee Odhran Edger who has been dealt the worst hand of all. Any family who has been through this before knows this is hard for all the family! And anyone who knows Odhran knows he would go to the end of the world for anyone!

"He is a hard wee grafter and is always there at the end of a call, a young man that never complains about anyone or anything.

"So as I know how tight-knit the people of Creggan and Derry are. I am hoping you can all dig deep and help his family with a bit of help for this long journey ahead of them the cost of seeing his battle through.

Everyone is struggling at the moment and any small donation would be gratefully appreciated. Come on people, let’s help this family have ease on one aspect of what’s going on in their lives at the moment."

Meanwhile, Brandywell Greyhound Track, who described Odhran as a 'lifetime attendee', added: "We have recently learned that Odhran has been diagnosed with leukemia and is undergoing 4-6 weeks of treatment in Belfast.

"Many of our patrons have been in touch asking how they can help, one of the ideas is to hold a collection at tonight's race meeting (Monday 15 August 2022).

"We would ask for your support to help aid Odhran and his family ease some of the financial burden at this time."
