Community in shock after two children die in Clifton flat fire

The Clifton community is in shock after a tragic flat fire has resulted in the deaths of two children. Emergency services were called to Fairisle Close, Clifton on Sunday, November 20, at around 3:17am following reports of a fire.

A woman and two young children were treated at the scene by East Midlands Ambulance Service for smoke inhalation before they were all taken to Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham. Sadly it has been confirmed by Nottinghamshire Police that a one year old and three year old have been pronounced dead at the hospital, whilst the woman remains in a critical condition.

A murder investigation is now underway, after a joint fire and police investigation concluded that the fire was started deliberately. Councillor for Clifton East, Kevin Clarke, has described the tragic incident as a "shock."

He said: "If it's what they say it is and it's arson then its absolutely unbelievable. It's terrible, I'm lost for words really.

"My thoughts go out to the family straight away. I'm sure the community will rally together, it's very close around that area."

Following the news of the fatal fire, Nottingham City Council leader, David Mellen, said: “I am so saddened to hear this tragic news. The loss of two young children is completely heartbreaking.

“We’ll do all we can to support the family and community at this deeply upsetting time.” The fire service also shared its immense sadness following the incident, with Group Manager Chris Clark said: "All of our thoughts are with the family of those involved and we send our deepest condolences."

Speaking from the scene, local residents expressed their shock at what has happened. Laura Smith, 34, a childminder who was also evacuated from her home on Sumburgh Road, said: "All I saw was the smoke. I could hear all the sirens as well.

"We were evacuated at about 4.30am. It was really a bit frightening, I had to wake up my 12-year-old daughter and get her out."
