A community has been left devastated following the death of a well-known GAA stalwart in Galway.
Newbridge native John Egan sadly passed away on Sunday, September 25.
He was a GAA enthusiast and will be deeply missed by many in the community, reports Galway Beo.
St. James Senior Gaelic Football Club wrote a touching tribute in his honour along with a lovely picture of John with his wife Anne during the Intermediate Club Connacht final in 2010.
The club wrote on Facebook: “Very sad news this evening as we hear the passing of John Egan (snr).
“John was a member of the club and both his sons John (jnr) and Padraig played a pivotal role on the field of play for the jimmies over the years!
They concluded: “The club would like to offer our condolences to his wife Anne (Lyster) Egan, his loving sons Kieran, John and Padraig.
“His adoring grandchildren Kaitlin, Liam, Jack and Dylan. Brothers and sister, daughters in law and partners, sisters in law, brothers in law, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends.”
And tributes have also poured in under the post and on RIP.ie.
One said: “So sorry for your terrible loss Anne. Fond memories of our great chats and laughs in Brennan's Bar. John was such a great character. Thoughts and prayers are with you all.”
Another person added: “So sorry to hear this news, particularly for you Anne and all your family. John was a real gentle giant, a truly decent man and he will be missed greatly.”
Someone else commented: “Our sincere sympathy Ann, kieran, John and Padraig. May John's gentle soul rest in peace. A wonderful Gentleman”.
John's funeral details are as follows: Reposing at St. Anne’s Funeral home, this Tuesday from 5 o’clock. Removal at 7 o’clock to St. Patrick’s Church, Newbridge.
Funeral mass on Wednesday at 12 noon. Burial afterwards to the new cemetery Killererin.
