The Washington Commanders are 3-4 after Sunday’s Week 7 loss to the New York Giants. It was Washington’s fourth loss in its last five games.
Another nightmare start doomed Washington. Without starting quarterback Daniel Jones and virtually their entire offensive line, the struggling Giants jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the second quarter and held on for a 14-7 lead.
Washington quarterback Sam Howell was sacked six times, with five coming in the first half. In eight first-half possessions, the Commanders punted seven times.
Defensively, the Giants racked up 256 total yards in the first half. While Washington’s defense shut down New York in the second half, the deficit proved too much to overcome on Sunday.
The snap counts are in for Washington. We review them here.
Offense
- Rookie OL Ricky Stromberg saw 22 snaps in place of left guard Saahdiq Charles, who left the game in the second half with a calf injury.
- Brian Robinson Jr. (34) and Antonio Gibson 26) split the carries in the backfield, with rookie Chris Rodriguez Jr. also getting some time.
- Speaking of Rodriguez, he played nine snaps. He carried the ball seven times for 31 yards in those nine snaps. He should be used more moving forward.
- Terry McLaurin (61), Jahan Dotson (58), and Curtis Samuel (38) led the wide receivers in snaps. Byron Pringle and Dyami Brown also received some action.
- At tight end, Logan Thomas played 47 snaps, with John Bates behind him with 41 snaps. This was a result of Washington using maximum protection for Sam Howell. Cole Turner saw 14 snaps.
Defense
- The secondary (Kendall Fuller, Percy Butler, Benjamin St-Juste and Kamren Curl) were the only defensive players to play 100% of the snaps.
- Chase Young once again led the defensive line, playing 90% of the snaps. Young had an excellent game.
- Daron Payne (58), Jonathan Allen (52) and Montez Sweat (48) were right behind Young.
- Linebacker Cody Barton left in the first quarter after 12 snaps with an injury. Barton had played every defensive snap until that point. David Mayo filled in for Barton.
- The most curious aspect of this game was rookie defensive backs Emmanuel Forbes (5) and Quan Martin (5) combining for 10 defensive snaps.
