Commanders secondary coach Chris Harris talks playing Forrest, Curl together

Washington Commanders safety Kamren Curl missed Week 1 with a thumb injury. In his absence, second-year safety Darrick Forrest made his first NFL start and ended up as the league’s highest-ranking safety, per Pro Football Focus.

If you aren’t impressed with PFF, just go back and watch Washington in Week 1 vs. Jacksonville. The most impressive player on the Commanders’ defense was Forrest. He broke up a touchdown pass, a two-point conversion, delivered multiple big hits and ended the game with an interception.

Now, Washington could be getting Curl back in Week 2 against the Detroit Lions.

With Bobby McCain at free safety, Curl would return to his role at strong safety. Where does that leave Forrest? He would likely play some at the Buffalo nickel role.

Washington’s secondary coach, Chris Harris, spoke with the media Friday about Curl and Forrest, specifically them playing together.

“It’ll kind of morph,” Harris said of playing the young safeties together. “We have three good safeties. I mean just like last season, we had three safeties playing at times with Landon [Collins] Kam and Bobby [McCain]. I’m pretty sure it’ll be some combination because after seeing what we saw Sunday, we know it is not too big for DeFoe. He can play and then whenever Kam gets back, it is gonna be fun. It’s gonna be exciting to mix and match the pieces and make sure the right combination is out there on the field to give us our best possibility to win games.”

Harris took turns explaining what made each player special.

The Commanders need to find ways to get their best players on the field. We know Curl is one of Washington’s top defenders and Forrest appears well on his way.
