The Washington Commanders have been clear they plan to add another running back before training camp. That running back could come via the veteran route, or the Commanders could look toward the upcoming 2023 NFL draft for that running back.
The Commanders used a third-round pick on Alabama running back Brian Robinson Jr. in 2022. That proved an excellent pick as Robinson emerged as a key figure in Washington’s offense in the middle of last season. Washington also has another former third-round pick and 1,000-yard rusher, Antonio Gibson, on the roster. However, Gibson is entering the final season of his contract.
Unfortunately, due to a lingering neck injury, Washington was forced to release J.D. McKissic, one of the NFL’s best pass-catching backs.
The Commanders have shown an interest in Tulane running back Tyjae Spears, who could go higher than what Washington desires.
Another running back the Commanders have shown an interest in is Zach Evans of Mississippi. Washington recently hosted Evans on a visit, per Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 in Houston.

The 5-foot-11, 202-pound Evans is a former five-star recruit from Houston who signed with TCU out of high school. After two seasons with the Horned Frogs, Evans transferred to Ole Miss in 2022, where he enjoyed his best season. Evans rushed for 936 yards on 144 attempts and scored nine touchdowns last season.
Evans is a big-play back and does have an injury history. However, Evans has low mileage, finishing his college career with only 320 touches [290 rushing attempts, 30 receptions].
Evans is the type of player you take a gamble on during day three of the NFL draft.
