Chase Young is back. Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera confirmed Friday that Young will play in Sunday’s Week 2 game against the Denver Broncos.
“I think that’s why it took so long to get him back on the field,” Rivera said Friday, per Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post. “The doctors wanted to make sure; they wanted to be careful with it. And, again, they had probably in their minds what they felt he had to show them to have him play this week. We’re pretty excited about him being back out there.”
Young suffered a stinger in the first half of Washington’s first preseason game at Cleveland on Aug. 11. While Young could be on the field with his teammates since the injury, he wasn’t cleared for contact until late last week. Rivera said the team wanted to see how Young responded to contact this week before activating him.
In Washington’s Week 1 win over the Cardinals, the defense gave up just 210 total yards and did not allow a touchdown. Defensive end Montez Sweat and defensive tackles Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne combined for six tackles for loss. As a team, the Commanders had 11 tackles for loss.
Young played three games last season after returning from a knee injury he suffered in Week 10 of the 2021 season. Young tore the ACL and ruptured the patellar tendon in his right knee.
Young is certainly ready for Sunday.
“I’m feeling blessed, man. I’m ready to rock,” Young said. “Obviously, I want to play every game, everybody wants to play every game, but it’s all good. My time will come. It’s time. Now it’s time to go play.”
