Coming soon: Govt career counselling centres in Delhi

NEW DELHI: Delhi government will soon open career counselling centres for job aspirants in each of the capital’s 11 districts. These centres will be linked with Rozgar Bazar 2.0, the upgraded version of the job portal run by the state government.

According to government officials, anyone who registers on the job portal will be eligible to seek career counselling from the government free of cost. The government will tie up with agencies that provide such guidance to young job seekers.

“Often, we find that there is a gap between the aspirations of a job seeker and his/her qualifications and skills. The counselling centres will help them make the correct choice of vacancies available for them on the portal,” a Delhi government official said. “The counsellors will also suggest how aspirants can upskill themselves for better opportunities.”

The government recently conducted a pilot study and organised counselling sessions at two centres in Tughlaqabad and Pusa. Randomly selected aspirants registered with the existing Rozgar Bazar portal were asked to attend. Two agencies with expertise in career counselling, Meritoria and Magicbus, conducted the sessions.

Many of those who attended the sessions were called for interviews by companies within three weeks after they changed their search criteria. Around half of them were employed.

“The average rating given to the sessions by the attendees was 8.25 on a scale of 10,” said an official. He added that the government now planned to formalise everything and the counselling centres would start functioning with the launch of the new version of the job portal.

Two weeks after counselling, a follow-up ascertains the job-search progress of the applicant who attended the counselling. “The counselling is systematic, with job suitability and skilling guidance provided to the applicants. An action plan document is prepared and its copy was also shared with each applicant,” revealed another official.

Delhi government had launched its employment portal, Rozgar Bazaar, in July in 2020 during the first phase of the lockdown to bring job providers and those seeking employment on one platform.

The advanced version of Rozgar Bazaar 2.0 will be an algorithm-based platform to help job seekers find the most suitable vacancies available. “We will start with one counselling centre in each district and later increase the numbers if the demand increases,” the official added.
