Comic Kevin Bridges slammed for joke Queen 'won't be only old woman to die this winter'

Comedian Kevin Bridges has been slammed for making a "distasteful" joke about the Queen's death at his Glasgow gig on Thursday night.

The comic, from Clydebank, quipped Her Majesty "won't be the only old woman to die this winter" as he made reference to the cost of living crisis and rising energy bills, after it was announced Queen Elizabeth II had passed away aged 96.

The Scottish stand-up comedian, 35, has sparked a fierce debate on Twitter, with some calling out his gag at being insensitive to the nation's devastating loss, while others have hit out at "woke snowflakes".

Kevin told the audience: "Good evening on this historic evening.

"This is the 40th time that I have performed at this venue so I'm sure you'll read about it in all the papers in the morning, on the front page of the Daily Telegraph."

He laughed, then added: "Anyway welcome to the only f*cking show in Britain going ahead this evening.

"The doors were at 6.30pm and she hung on, it's what she would have wanted, so welcome."

He then laughed and waited while the crowd responded with laughter and clapping.

Kevin added: "I'm doing it for Lizzie and I've worn a black suit as a tribute. Probably the last show before we back into lockdown."

He added: "People checking their phones to see if they've got the day off in the morning.

"The show is going ahead, she's not going to be the only old woman to die this winter."

After a TikTok of the moment went viral, people had plenty to say on social media.

One wrote: "Kevin Bridges well and truly shown his true colours - vile," while another added: "I was there and it was uncomfortable to listen to".

A third chimed: "Disgusting/distasteful comments - trying to make jokes when it's wasn't the time or will ever be the time for jokes of that nature."

However others stuck up for the comedian.

One wrote: "True, old people will likely die because they can't afford to turn on their heating", while another typed: "Wait, why are the far-right edge-lords getting angry with Kevin Bridges? I thought you wanted comedy to be edgy with a freedom to speak your mind, and not watered down, woke nonsense? You snowflakes are exhausting".

A third added: "Kevin Bridges is a comedian. Maybe the timing was poor but don’t act like it wasn’t expected. While it’s fresh, he was always going to crack jokes about the Queen."
