Colwick Hall Hotel hopes expansion will make it 'premier events and hotel venue in East Midlands'

A Nottingham hotel will soon be revamped in an attempt to make it the "premier events and hotel venue in the East Midlands". The Colwick Hall Hotel on Racecourse Road has been given permission to expand, adding three new buildings to increase the number of bedrooms by 40 and create a banqueting suite, with Nottingham City Council green lighting the project on April 1.

With 16 bedrooms at present, the current number of guestrooms would be more than doubled by the move. The new facilities will be designed to cater for weddings, balls and formal dinners and will replace the marquee which had previously been used at the hall, which had in the past had been revealed to have been lacking the required planning permission.

The hotel operates in tandem with a function and conferencing business so the upkeep of the listed landmark hall can be financed. Officials behind the extension have previously stated that they want to "reaffirm the reputation of Colwick Hall Hotel as the premier events and hotel venue in the East Midlands".

"The Applicant’s vision is to reaffirm the reputation of Colwick Hall Hotel as the premier events and hotel venue in the East Midlands. The new facilities at Colwick Hall will be heavily sought-after by prestigious firms seeking a bespoke and awe-inspiring location for corporate functions and will offer a truly unique backdrop for weddings, balls and formal dinners," a planning document stated.

"The function suite and overnight accommodation will go ‘hand in hand’ and together they will attract a new clientele who often seek both facilities. The success of the events and hotel business will secure a profitable and lasting use for the Hall, allowing the grade II* listed building and its grounds to be continued to be properly maintained and celebrated for generations to come."

Heywppd House will comprise of 18 hotel rooms, Lovelace Court will have 11 hotel rooms and Wentworth Orangery will contain the banqueting hall and 11 hotel rooms on the first floor. Car parking will be rearranged and new landscaping will be undertaken.

Other planning documents outlined that the high cost of maintaining the Georgian building and the relatively small number of bedrooms means that the financial viability of the hotel business was "finely balanced". The freehold of the hall and its grounds is owned by Nottingham City Council but the operators of the Colwick Hall Hotel have a long term lease.
