Colts were the only spot Matt Ryan wanted to go

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Matt Ryan went through a whirlwind of a week before being traded from the Atlanta Falcons but once he knew where he wanted to go, there was only one team he considered.

Having a no-trade clause in his contract certainly helped push that along and Ryan made it clear in his press conference on Tuesday that the decision was mostly up to him and his family. Does he stay with the Falcons, or does he request a trade to the only team he had his eyes on in the Colts?

At the end of the day, Ryan opted for a fresh start.

“I knew at some point I was going to need to make a decision on whether or not I wanted to stay and as I looked into it, I knew there was only one spot that I wanted to go,” Ryan told the media. “There was no doubt that if I were to make a move, this is exactly where I wanted to be.”

When the Falcons learned Deshaun Watson would be available for trade, they were one of the finalists for a deal. They were even considered the favorite before the Cleveland Browns swooped in for a surprising trade.

While all that was going on, the talks of the Colts going after Ryan intensified. Even after Watson chose the Browns, those talks continued and the Colts wound up landing the former MVP.

“I’m not naive, I understand how this business works and that there’s going to be movement. From the time it started last week until we sit here today, I thought everyone handled things professionally,” Ryan said. “I didn’t like everything I heard, but you don’t always like what you hear sometimes. But they were professional and handled it really well.”

Ryan couldn’t have handled his introductory press conference better than he did on Tuesday. He paid homage to the quarterbacks that came before him while showing a spark of rejuvenation when he spoke.

The Colts need to add weapons for Ryan in the passing game but on the surface, this move looks like a win.
