Colts waive veteran DE to make room on roster for Tyquan Lewis

After activating defensive end Tyquan Lewis from injured reserve on Saturday, the Indianapolis Colts waived Genard Avery as the corresponding roster move to make room.

This move does not come as a surprise, with the Colts getting healthier along the defensive front and Avery being a regular healthy scratch on game days.

Avery joined the Colts in 2023 as a free agent but missed the entire season with a knee injury.

The team would re-sign him in the offseason and he spent training camp and the preseason with Indianapolis. During roster cutdowns he was released before being signed to the practice squad.

Then with the Colts dealing with injuries along the defensive front early in the year, Avery was added to the 53-man roster after Week 2 and remained there until Saturday.

Avery played two defensive snaps in the team’s Week 5 matchup with Jacksonville, according to Pro Football Focus. He did not play any special teams snaps.

Avery was a fifth-round pick in 2018 and has played 1,310 career defensive snaps, totaling 64 pressures, 42 of which came in his rookie season, 10 sacks, and 89 total tackles.

Now at the defensive end position for the Colts is Lewis, Kwity Paye, Dayo Odeyingbo, Laiatu Latu, and Isaiah Land.
