Colts to interview Raheem Morris for HC job Friday

The Indianapolis Colts are expected to interview Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris for the head coach vacancy Friday, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Morris is one of the strongest candidates on the market, and he’s been widely popular among teams searching for a new head coach. He has the experience and success as a coordinator that teams want to see when they bring in a new head coach.

Morris is one of the most experienced coaches the Colts have requested to interview for their head coach vacancy. He started coaching in the NFL all the way back in 2002 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which was the year after Tony Dungy’s final season there.

Morris held assistant coaching roles with the Bucs throughout the 2000s, serving as the defensive backs coach (2002), a defensive assistant (2003), the assistant defensive backs coach (2004-2005) and the defensive backs coach (2007-2008).

Then, he was hired as the head coach for three seasons (2009-2011), going 21-38.

Morris spent the next three seasons as the defensive backs coach for the Washington Redskins (2012-2014) before joining the Atlanta Falcons coaching staff for the next six seasons.

With the Falcons, Morris was the assistant head coach (2015-2019) and pass game coordinator (2016-2019) before taking over as the defensive coordinator in 2020.

Morris then joined the Rams as their defensive coordinator for the last two seasons, which included leading a stout defensive unit to a victory in Super Bowl LVI.

Morris should be considered one of the top candidates considering his past coaching experience and recent success as a defensive coordinator with the Rams.

The head coaching search will be led by general manager Chris Ballard, but the decision ultimately resides with owner Jim Irsay.
