Following Friday’s practice, Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen announced that linebacker EJ Speed will be out for Sunday’s Week 16 matchup with Tennessee.
Speed would play 61 of the 63 defensive snaps in Week 15 against Denver but popped up on the injury report on Wednesday with a knee injury.
This isn’t the first time that Speed has been on the injury report due to his knee this season, and he did miss the Colts’ Week 7 matchup against Miami.
On the season, Speed has totaled 118 total tackles and, in coverage, has recorded two pass breakups, one interception, and has allowed just under 10.0 yards per catch.
Although without Speed, it does look like the Colts will be getting Jaylon Carlies back. The Indy Star’s Joel Erickson would say that Carlies “should be good to go.”
He was designated to return to practice last week from injured reserve, but did not play against Denver. Carlies has been a full participant in all six practices over the last two weeks.
When Speed was out during Week 7, it was Carlies who filled in for him next to Zaire Franklin with Grant Stuard as the third linebacker when in base. The Colts could go that route again, although we have to see if Carlies will be on any sort of snap count with this being his first game back since that Miami game.
