Colts reportedly releasing veteran CB Chris Lammons

As part of the roster cuts taking place, the Colts are reportedly releasing veteran cornerback Chris Lammons, according to Joel Erickson of the Indy Star.

Erickson added that “Lammons could be back depending on options.”

Update: The Colts rostered only five cornerbacks–Kenny Moore, JuJu Brents, Jaylon Jones, Darrell Baker, and Dallis Flowers.

Lammons was competing with rookie Micah Abraham for the backup nickel cornerback role behind Kenny Moore.

Lammons, who has been in the NFL since 2018, played in all three preseason games, totaling 49 snaps. He made four tackles while missing two, according to PFF.

In coverage, he allowed three receptions on five targets but limited pass catchers to only 5.7 yards per catch. Lammons also had a fumble recovery and played 12 special teams snaps.

He spent most of the 2023 season on the Colts practice squad, filling in for Moore in Week 17 against Las Vegas when he was injured.

While the experience that Lammons has, appearing in 46 games over his career, oftentimes when it comes to these back end roster openings, teams prefer to go with the younger, higher upside players, which in this instance is Abraham.

Although Abraham would spent most of his college career on the boundary, he transitioned well to the slot this summer, showing a willingness as a tackler and those ball skills of his, forcing a fumble against Denver and then returning it for a touchdown. During his college career, Abraham had 12 interceptions and 43 passes defensed.

At this time, it hasn’t been confirmed that Abraham made the roster or not.
