Following their preseason game with the Denver Broncos on Sunday, the Indianapolis Colts announced a pair of roster moves on Monday, claiming running back Demetric Felton off waivers and waiving/injured UDFA running back Trent Pennix.
The addition of a running back was almost expected after Pennix exited Sunday’s game with a groin injury and Trey Sermon with a hamstring injury. Before Felton, that left the Colts with only four running backs on the roster, which just isn’t enough depth with two joint practices and a preseason game all taking place over the next several days.
Felton was a former sixth-round pick by Cleveland in 2021 out of UCLA and was recently released by Chicago, which put him on waivers.
In his NFL career, Felton has appeared in 24 games, all with the Browns between the 2021 and 2022 seasons. During that span, Felton made a greater impact in the passing game, with just eight career carries for 20 yards compared to 20 receptions on 26 targets, totaling 181 yards and two scores.
As a pass catcher, Felton brings some versatility to the running back position, able to line up both out wide and in the slot.
Felton has also played 247 special teams snaps over those two years with 10 career kick return attempts and 39 punt return attempts. Felton averaged 18.3 yards per return on kickoffs and 6.9 yards per return on punts–potentially providing the Colts with some added depth during training camp while Josh Downs is out.
If Sermon has to miss any time, Tyler Goodson and Evan Hull will help handle the workload behind Jonathan Taylor. No updates on Sermon’s status for this week have been provided at this time.
