Colts’ Julian Blackmon dealing with ankle sprain

Indianapolis Colts safety Julian Blackmon suffered an ankle sprain during the 20-17 win over the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 3.

Blackmon suffered the injury on a play during the first half. He was able to walk off the field under his own power but was ruled out for the remainder of the game when the team came back out for the second half.

Head coach Frank Reich told reporters Monday that Blackmon will be evaluated throughout the week.

“Julian (Blackmon) had an ankle sprain. We’ll continue to evaluate that as the week goes on,” Reich said.

Blackmon has been having a solid start to his season thus far working at the free safety role. It was a bit interesting that seventh-round pick Rodney Thomas II was the one to replace him during the game.

Thomas immediately had a chance to make a play, saving a touchdown on a deep pass from Patrick Mahomes to Justin Watson right before the first half ended.

Thomas wound up playing 81% of the snaps in the game while veteran Rodney McLeod played every snap at strong safety over rookie Nick Cross, who played just one snap in Week 3.

“Rodney really showed up big. I think the first thing you look for in these kind of situations is, is he comfortable out there? Does he look like – is it too big for him?” Reich said Monday. “He stepped in there and it was, I don’t want to say easy for him, but the lights weren’t too bright or anything. He stepped in there, had a lot of poise, made plays. Consistently, didn’t have mental errors. So, really encouraged by his play.”

The first injury report doesn’t come out until Wednesday as the team prepares for Week 4 so Blackmon’s participation levels will certainly be something to watch throughout the week.
