The Indianapolis Colts have remained bullish on the current state of the wide receiver room, but it’s also clear they may not be shy about adding a veteran to the mix before training camp.
As the Colts go through OTAs and minicamp over the next two weeks, head coach Frank Reich said the team is open to adding a veteran if they feel it’s needed.
“Chris (Ballard) and I were talking about that today, talking about it this morning in fact. So, that’s the ongoing discussion,” Reich told the media Wednesday. “We can feel good about where we’re at – I can tell you right now, I’m going to feel good after two weeks with this group that we have.”
There are still a few names available that may pique the Colts’ interest even if the likelihood of them adding another name is slim.
While T.Y. Hilton is still available, there are other names like Julio Jones, Odell Beckham Jr. and Will Fuller V who may fit what the Colts want. All of them bring inherent injury risk, which is likely why they haven’t been signed yet.
The Colts have a young wide receiver room being led by Michael Pittman Jr., who enjoyed a strong breakout season in 2022. The roles behind him are up for grabs in a competition that includes several young players like Alec Pierce, Parris Campbell, Ashton Dulin, Mike Strachan and Dezmon Patmon.
Reich said it will be an ongoing discussion about whether they need to add a veteran, but the move may not come until after OTAs are concluded.
“We’re always looking to make the team better. Chris ultimately will guide that decision on the roster. As we’ve said, that’s his role. So, he and I will talk everything through,” Reich said. “We’ll see how these guys do through all these and then do we need to add somebody? Do we need to talk about T.Y. (Hilton) if T.Y.’s still out there and then how does that all play out?”
We will see how this situation plays out when the offseason training program ends on June 16, but there is always the possibility they bring in more competition to the room.
