Colts’ Anthony Richardson, Ryan Kelly in concussion protocol

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson and center Ryan Kelly are in the concussion protocol following the Week 2 win over the Houston Texans.

Richardson played 32% of the offensive snaps before exiting the game early in the second quarter. He hit his head hard on the turf as we tackled during his second touchdown run during the first quarter.

Richardson played the next two drives, each resulting in a three-and-out before he self-reported concussion symptoms.

As to whether Richardson can miss practice this week and still play Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens, head coach Shane Steichen didn’t have an answer.

“That’s a good question. We’re going to work through those things and we’ll talk through those tonight,” Steichen said Monday. “I don’t have a definitive answer for you right now, but we’ll work through those things tonight.”

Richardson was on his way to having a great game against the Texans before the injury. The Colts were able to keep the offense running smoothly with Gardner Minshew under center, but the rookie quarterback has yet to finish a game this season.

As for Kelly, it was a similar situation in which he self-reported the symptoms at halftime and then was ruled out.

“Same thing. He reported it. I think it was right before the half or something and then he said it at halftime,” Steichen said.

Second-year undrafted free agent Wesley French was the one to replace Kelly at center. He played 32% of the snaps.

Recovery timelines for concussions vary from player to player. Some can bounce back in a few days while it could take weeks for others. We simply won’t know how they’re trending until the practice reports come out.

Hopefully, they can get through the protocol quickly, but the Colts also have to be smart with both players so this will certainly be a situation to monitor.
