Colts add former third-round pick at CB to roster

The Indianapolis Colts claimed cornerback Ambry Thomas on waivers, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Thomas is a former third-round selection by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2021 NFL draft and had spent his career there up until recently.

This season, Thomas suffered a broken forearm during the preseason that landed him on season-ending injured reserve. Then earlier this week, the 49ers would waive Thomas from the injured reserve list with only three games left in the season.

In his previous three seasons with San Francisco, Thomas had played nearly 1,100 defensive snaps, which includes 573 in 2023 and 483 during his rookie season in 2021.

During that span, he’s shown to be a reliable tackler, missing only four of his 98 attempts. In coverage, Thomas has a career completion rate of 70.3% at 12.0 yards per catch with two interceptions and 10 pass breakups.

The boundary cornerback position hasn’t been a position of depth for the Colts this season. Behind the starters Samuel Womack and Jaylon Jones on the depth chart is David Long. The other two cornerbacks on the 53-man roster are Kenny Moore and Chris Lammons, who are slot defenders, although Moore does line up outside as well.

Given Thomas’ injury, this is a move by the Colts that more so may be about the future rather than the 2024 season. However, it’s important to note that Thomas is set to be an unrestricted free agent next offseason.

In addition to landing Thomas on waivers, the Colts also announced on Wednesday that JuJu Brents has been designated to return from injured reserve and was back on the practice field.
