Colorado football coach Deion Sanders has yet to coach a down against a Pac-12 opponent. However, the Pro Football Hall of Famer already has rankled—and been rankled by—his future conference opponents.
An anonymous Pac-12 coach made headlines recently for calling the Buffaloes’ hiring of Sanders “a lose-lose” in Athlon Sports’s annual preview magazine. The coach went on to say, “Either he’s gonna be really good really fast and leave for another gig, which, looking at that roster doesn’t seem possible. … The alternative is that they’re gonna be bad, and they’ll end up firing him in a big circus.”
Sanders did not take kindly to those words, and he expressed as such in a reply to an Instagram post displaying the comments.
"This is the Dumbest thing I’ve almost ever seen and Only reason I said almost is because I’m giving y’all time to top this stupidity," Sanders wrote.
Colorado hired Sanders away from Jackson State on Dec. 3, 2022, and he immediately made headlines in Boulder by liberally using the transfer portal to overhaul the roster of a 1-11 team.
The Buffaloes will open their season against TCU, the defending Fiesta Bowl champion, on Sept. 2. Colorado’s conference opener will follow on Sept. 23, against Oregon in Eugene.
