In a recent development, a postal worker and her friend have been arrested in Colorado for their alleged involvement in forging stolen mail ballots. The suspects, identified as a mail carrier and her acquaintance, were taken into custody on charges of identity theft, attempt to influence a public servant, and forgery.
The investigation was initiated following reports from residents who discovered discrepancies with their signatures on ballots they never submitted or received. This prompted authorities to delve into the matter, leading to the arrests of the two individuals.
Colorado, known for its widespread mail-in voting system, has been praised for its secure and convenient approach to elections. Voters receive their ballots via mail and can either mail them back or drop them off in designated ballot boxes. Election officials meticulously verify the signatures on the ballot envelopes to ensure the legitimacy of the votes.
The incident came to light when Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold disclosed that a number of stolen ballots had been fraudulently submitted in Mesa County. Despite efforts to prevent such occurrences, a few fraudulent votes managed to slip through the verification process and were counted in the recent election.
Authorities are currently in the process of identifying additional victims who may have had their ballots stolen. It is estimated that over 20 individuals could have been affected by this fraudulent scheme.
Notably, Mesa County has been in the spotlight recently due to a separate incident involving former county clerk Tina Peters, who was sentenced to prison for her involvement in a data-breach scheme linked to false claims of voter machine fraud during the 2020 presidential race.
