In a recent development, the family of Black girls who were handcuffed and held at gunpoint by Colorado police in a mistaken car theft incident has been awarded a significant settlement of $1.9 million. The incident, which took place in August 2020, drew national attention and sparked widespread outrage over issues of racial profiling and excessive use of force by law enforcement.
The incident occurred when a group of girls, aged 6 to 17, were wrongly identified as the suspects in a stolen vehicle case. Aurora police officers stopped the vehicle, surrounded it, and drew their weapons, with some even directing the young girls to lie facedown on the hot pavement. The traumatizing ordeal was captured on video by a bystander, which further amplified the incident's impact and led to increased scrutiny.
