One man has been arrested after two Colorado middle school students overdosed on "magic mushrooms" they bought off of Telegram, police said.
A school resource officer at Fox Meadow Middle School reported that two students had overdosed at about 9:15 a.m. Tuesday before they were transported to the hospital. The Colorado Springs Police Department said the two had overdosed on psilocybin mushrooms, otherwise known as "magic mushrooms" or shrooms.
Police said that after a series of interviews, they learned that the students along with two others had gotten the drugs through an adult dealer they met on Telegram. The four bought the shrooms from the man Monday night in a parking lot, as reported by The Gazette.
Detectives worked with the students' parents to gather the remaining mushrooms to use as evidence.
The detectives also utilized one of the student's phones to pose as a teen to arrange another meeting with the dealer. There, they arrested 21-year-old Damien Solano, who was carrying two ounces of mushrooms at the time, as reported by KXRM-TV.
Solano is facing four counts of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance, one count of an attempted sale and four counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
In 2022, Colorado legalized five psychedelic drugs including psilocybin, however the drugs are only legal for those 21 and older.
