As upstart Colorado continues to makes waves under Deion Sanders, the program’s premier wide receiver recruit in the Class of 2024 has reportedly made a major decision regarding his commitment.
Four-star receiver Aaron Butler, a senior at Calabasas High School (Calif.), announced Friday his plans to shut down for the season to focus on school so he can graduate in December and enroll early at Colorado, according to 24/7 Sports.
Butler, who committed to CU in May, will now eye joining Sanders’s Buffaloes in the spring after playing in the first four games of his final high school season.
“Aaron has a lot of goals and as a family, we felt this was the best move for him,” Butler’s father Robb-Davon Butler told 24/7. “He’s taking four classes on campus and then four more online classes and that work load was really tough to balance with playing out the rest of the season.
“A lot of players who graduate early plan it out as freshman and sophomores and are already taking a full load of classes. We really didn’t decide on this until the summer so he’s trying to jam a whole year’s worth of school in to one semester, but we think it’s worth it.”
In regards to the change of plans, Butler and family reportedly came to the conclusion after speaking with members of CU’s staff, which are said to have “big goals” for him, per 24/7.
Standing at six-feet and 170 pounds, Butler’s profile lists him as a speedy and polished route runner who can line up anywhere on the field. So far in four games with Sanders, the Buffs (3–1), led by quarterback Shedeur Sanders, have shown a tendency to rack up yards and score in bunches.
Looking ahead to the future, Butler expressed his excitement to join Sanders and CU’s offense, noting his visit in the spring made him believe “big things were coming” in Boulder.
“I can’t wait to get there, Colorado is home for me,” Butler said Friday. “There were a lot of reasons why I committed there and really believe in the direction the program is going under coach Deion.
“When I visited for the spring game, you could just tell big things were coming. I see a lot of opportunity to step in play right away and I love the talent that’s coming in with me. I know a lot of people were stressing about the players that were leaving but trust me, there are some dogs coming in and we’re just getting started.”
