The head of one of Australia's biggest fast food companies is stepping down following the death of his wife.

Drew O'Malley took leave from Collins Foods in early February as his spouse Jolanta sought treatment for as a serious illness.

"Tragically, Jola passed away in April, and Mr O'Malley has subsequently decided to step down to focus on his family," Collins Foods said in an statement on Tuesday.

An online fundraising page on the Melanoma Institute Australia's website provided further details.

"Jola was only 43 years old and a healthy, fit young woman who was somehow struck down in her prime by this awful disease within a space of only three months," the page said.

Collins Foods operates KFC restaurants across Australia, Germany and the Netherlands, as well as Taco Bells in Australia.

It employs more than 15,000 workers.

Former CEO Kevin Perkins had been serving as interim managing director and chief executive since February and will continue in that role while the board undertakes a local and international CEO search.

Collins Foods chairman Robert Kaye said the board extended its condolences to Mr O'Malley and his family and thanked him for his contributions over the last seven years.

"Drew led the business through the unprecedented COVID pandemic and has consistently delivered strong financial results during his time as CEO," Mr Kaye said.

"His tenure has overseen a period of significant operational expansion in Australia and Europe, driving strong growth in shareholder returns. He leaves the group in a strong financial and operational position, well-placed for future growth."
