A big one-day free summer picnic party with live music is to be held on College Green next month, church leaders at Bristol Cathedral have announced. And they’ve laid on cheap buses for families and groups from across Bristol to attend.
The Party On The Green will take place on Sunday, June 18, and everyone from across the city is invited to bring a picnic and enjoy activities laid on by people from the likes of the SS Great Britain, We The Curious and Young Bristol. There will also be a music stage, set up by St George’s Bristol, which feature local artists including Troyka, Mohamed Errebbaa, Kat Lyons, China Bowls and Knowle West’s own Kala Chng.
The idea emerged from the 2022 Jubilee Lunch that was organised on College Green by the Cathedral, and this year’s event looks set to be even bigger. It’s being organised as part of the celebrations of Bristol’s 650th anniversary since it gained city and county status.

“We look forward to welcoming the people of Bristol to celebrate 650 years of the county and our shared life together, in all our diversity,” said the Dean of Bristol, the Very Revd Dr Mandy Ford. “It will be great to enjoy the best of Bristol’s live music and cultural scene on our doorstep, and I hope that many people will respond to the invitation to join us!” she added.
The event is being delivered as one of the activities under the City Centre and High Streets Recovery and Renewal programme, funded by Bristol City Council and the West of England Combined Authority’s Love our High Streets project. It has also received sponsorship from the Friends of Bristol Cathedral and Bristol City Centre Business Improvement District.
“Bristol 650 is an opportunity for people to come together and celebrate Bristol as a diverse, multicultural city, renowned for its arts and creativity,” said Bristol’s deputy mayor, Cllr Craig Cheney. “Bristol Cathedral is doing this by bringing together communities from across our city with Party on the Green. This free, full day event is suitable for people of all ages and includes live music, food and family friendly games and activities,” he added.
Luke Jerram’s Oil Fountain, a fountain sculpture which flows with artificial oil instead of water, will also be on display in the Cathedral during this time as part of the Festival of Nature. There’s no charge for entry and everyone is welcome.
- To get to the event, which runs from 10.30am to 5pm, First Bus are offering families or groups cheaper bus travel. Up to five people can travel all day on the buses with a £5 group ticket through the First Bus app, with the discount code ‘POG2023’.
