It may only be Week 1, but the UConn football team may have already taken the crown for “Worst Trick Play of the Season” following a rough sequence against NC State Thursday night.
Facing first-and-10 from their own 36-yard line in the third quarter, Huskies quarterback Joseph Fagnano tossed a lateral pass to receiver James Burns in the backfield. Burns then swiftly attempted his own lateral to running back Brian Brewton, except the teammates’ synergy seemed out of whack as the two collided mid-play.
Initially, the botched play and collision appeared to result in a Burns fumble recovered by the Wolfpack, only for the ball to remain with UConn after officials ruled the pass incomplete.
Despite the lucky break, however, UConn couldn’t avoid getting roasted on social media for the awkward sequence, as fans couldn’t believe things could’ve gone so wrong in just the first game of the season.

Needless to say, the Huskies, who went on to lose 24–14, may need to spend extra time practicing their trick plays, or picking up some tips from their national champion basketball team, in the hopes of dodging another, more damaging disaster.
In the meantime, the only thing UConn can do is hope the jokes being made their expense will, at the very least, die down before Week 2:
