So the last season without a full-fledged national championship playoff ends with an unusual dearth of controversy. Maybe Georgia fans (and full disclosure, I’m one) would argue that the Bulldogs should’ve been in the playoff (and full disclosure, I’m not), and yes, Florida State should’ve been in. If the 12-team playoff coming next year accomplishes nothing else, it’ll ensure that no team from a major conference goes unbeaten and then doesn’t get a shot to play for the national title.
Michigan is absolutely a worthy champion. They shut down an explosive Washington offense by winning at the line of scrimmage, and they showed their own big-play prowess with some brilliant runs.
Thanks for following along with me as always, and if you’re just tuning in and want a less verbose take on the game, here’s your game report:
Back to the mailbag – Michigan fan Marc Glickman said he had to leave a bar after the third quarter and appreciated seeing the coverage here. Happy to help, but I hope you have a chance to watch the fourth quarter, at least the last 10 minutes, when the Wolverines finally blew the game open.
Nice moment of sportsmanship caught by the cameras as Penix hobbles up the tunnel holding his side in agony, and a Michigan player runs up to greet him before racing back out to the celebration.
J.J. McCarthy says he’ll miss it here, which sounds to me like he’s going pro after this. He wasn’t spectacular tonight but didn’t need to be, and he certainly took care of the ball.
