College fire alarm going off 'four or five times a day' as students 'vape'

A college student has said they are "beyond annoyed" as the fire alarm at their college won't stop going off.

Alix Meakin, a performing arts student at St Helen's College, said the fire alarm at the college's Town Centre Campus building has been going off daily - often multiple times each day - since the end of last month, with all students and staff expected to follow safety protocol and leave the building each time. Alix said they fear it will lead to a "boy who cries wolf" situation, where, fed up of the incessant false alarms, people stop adhering to regulations.

Alix told the ECHO: "Some days it'll be just like we're having a normal day, and it'll only go off once. Then other days it'll go off three or four times in just the afternoon.

"We're usually in lessons and each time we'll have to leave the building. But me and a friend we struggle to leave the building, along with a lot of other people there, because of disabilities.

"It's just become dangerous and irritating because it could come to the point where there's an actual fire and no one's going to believe it.

"One of my friends almost cracked her head because the fire alarms make her pass out and I had to catch her."

Alix said she believed people were deliberately vaping beneath the alarms, or even "spraying them with deodorant" to set them off.

In a letter to students seen by the ECHO, the college said they believe the "disruption" has been caused by the "childish and dangerous actions of a few individuals." The letter said any student "found to be involved will be reported to the police and will face exclusion from the college."

The college also mentioned in the letter that "vaping is not allowed anywhere within college buildings" and threatened those caught doing so could be disciplined. The letter also reminded students that when the fire alarm sounds, they must leave the building according to safety procedures.

The ECHO contacted St Helens College for a response to the claims.
