Mattel has released a new David Bowie-inspired Barbie doll. It’s the second time the US toy manufacturer has paid homage to the iconic singer - in 2019, Mattel released a doll inspired by Bowie’s Space Oddity phase.
The latest Barbie-as-Bowie toy dons the bespoke powder-blue suit that Bowie wore in the official Life On Mars? music video, complete with a foil-printed pin-stripe shirt, statement tie and platform shoes.
“Her bold blue eyeshadow and a hairstyle inspired by Bowie’s ’70s glam era bring this look to life,” the description reads. The doll comes with a stand and Certificate of Authenticity, according to Mattel.

Mattel’s publicity material for the new doll says: “David Bowie was a one-man cultural phenomenon for his contributions to music, art, fashion, and film. Our second tribute doll celebrates the 50th anniversary of his classic Hunky Dory, the iconic Life on Mars? video, and an outfit forever associated with this ultimate pop chameleon.
“We're starstruck by the way designer Linda Kyaw-Merschon and her team recreated this legendary moment in Bowie's history.
Designer Linda says: “It’s a tribute to Bowie – his outfit, his makeup, his features – to emulate his essence and make sure it looked like Barbie, but as Bowie.
It has been another busy year for Bowie collectors. A 50th anniversary vinyl reissue of the classic album Hunky Dory came out the day before what would have been the singer’s 75th birthday (January 8).
