Colin Murphy on 30 years of comedy and brand new tour announcement

As he announces a new tour for next year, Colin Murphy says there'll be "no Brexit" this time round.

His last tour Colinization was a sell out, and now the Whatchamacolin show promises to provide a show "full of pin perfect observations, self righteous indignation and a bit of swearing".

Speaking to Belfast Live, the Co Down man opened up about his first stint on stage, at a school play, and how decades later he is still enjoying every moment of the creative world.

He said: "When I was in primary school, I was an ugly sister in an all-boys primary school in Downpatrick. I got some laughs and it give me a thrill, it was brilliant. I didn't do anything for years and then started doing a bit of theatre, acting an improv. Then that was it - this.

"Starting off, there'd be a couple of minutes which would work but I was learning, and that is the only way to do it, but getting up there. I don't sit and write, I go in with an idea maybe. The best case scenario is that I have a notion of something in my head and I go in and it comes out fully formed.

"Normally I go in with half of an idea, that idea doesn't work, but then I improvise to cover what didn't work, and that is what I end up keeping. That's generally how it works - I wing it all the time. When I come off, I try to remember it then.

"With the Blame Game, it started off as a radio programme and I was already doing stuff with RTE so I was known down south, nobody knew me up here. There was something about doing something with the BBC though, because I grew up watching it.

"The hardest thing about Covid, was the no live audiences. To do comedy with no audience was hard because you get a real buzz off them. It is just brilliant having the live audiences back."

The new tour Whatchamacolin, will kick off at the McNeill Theatre in Larne on February 3 2023, and go on to including shows in Lisburn, Omagh Limavady, Armagh, Coleraine, Newtownabbey, Antrim and other impressive venues right across Northern Ireland.

Colin will also perform in the Grand Opera House, Belfast on June 29 and 30 and then on July 1, 2023.

He added: "People can expect no Brexit, no mention of it. Absolutely none. A tiny bit about Covid and a load of nonsense.

"There were a handful of us [comedians] for years and then because of social media, TikTok and YouTube, and now Podcasts too, people were able to do things from home. They then started to do it live. It's maybe less scary than it was when I started off, where you had to go out and face people.

"Now you can put something out there, and if you want, you can disable comments. I have been trying out the new stuff and have seen some people who I have never seen before, and there are tow or three who I have seen and I think in about two years time, they will be really, really good.

"There are a couple of people coming through that are brilliant. What advice I would give people who are interesting in the industry is to do sketches and things online, but nothing beats getting out in front of a crowd.

"It is a different skill set. Just do it, do anything and there are loads of ways nowadays - whether it is tweeting one liners out on Twitter or making sketches on TikTok, making a Podcast, there are loads.

"The best thing about doing it live, is that you get instant feedback. People don't really heckle anymore, or boo. People are really well behaved now."
