NEW DELHI: New Zealand selection manager Sam Wells has disclosed that veteran batter Colin Munro remains "potentially an option" for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Despite four years having passed since the 37-year-old last represented the Blackcaps, his recent stellar performance in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) has reignited discussions about his inclusion.
Wells mentioned that Munro was initially summoned for the upcoming five-match T20I series but opted not to join the squad. Nevertheless, his name will be under deliberation as New Zealand prepares to finalise the 15-player squad for the T20 World Cup.
"We got in touch with Colin. He's obviously been in fine form for the last few years in various competitions around the world and, in particular, has an excellent record in the Caribbean Premier League. He made himself unavailable for this tour but he's potentially still an option," Wells said as quoted from ESPNcricinfo.
Munro has showcased consistent performance in the past four years, accumulating 807 runs in 33 matches. His overall tally of 2353 runs makes him the seventh-highest run-scorer in the tournament's history and the top run-scorer among overseas players. Munro has maintained an impressive average of 35.65 and a striking rate of 128.86.
Despite his commendable record, Munro's last appearance for New Zealand was in 2020 before losing his central contract. Since then, the team has identified promising talents to occupy the opening slot, including Finn Allen, Devon Conway, and Rachin Ravindra, forming a solid top-order lineup.
However, in the event of injury sidelining a player during the competition, Munro could serve as a reliable replacement. His experience and proven track record make him a valuable asset for the team, ready to step in if needed.
"I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to work out that our top order is relatively settled. But if anything were to happen with injuries and what-not, he's still an option for us," Wells said.
New Zealand will commence their campaign in the T20 World Cup against Afghanistan on June 8. Subsequently, they will take on West Indies, Uganda, and Papua New Guinea at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad.
