Coles Responds To Viral TikToks Where An Employee Appears To Add ‘Yuge Mark Ups On Products

Supermarket giant Coles has responded to two viral TikToks where an employee is seemingly marking up the prices of a bunch of products in-store.

One of the most amazing things about TikTok is that it sometimes gives us normies insight into how things work behind closed doors.

Recently, a Coles employee shared what it’s like marking up the prices of products in two separate videos. Naturally, the videos have since gone gangbusters on the platform, with many shoppers sharing their outrage in the comments section.

“I miss hanging hundreds of price increases a week 💔 (not),” the TikToker wrote alongside hashtags that read “#coles” and “#pricegouging”.

In the video, the employee is seen changing the May 2022 price of Finish Quantum Ultimate Pro tablets 65 Pack from $33 to $64, all to the tune of the iconic Coles “Down Down” song. IYKYK.

Shoppers flocked to the comments section, stating their outrage with the price surges, with one writing that they thought the video was a “prank”.

“Rip dude risked his job for this,” one TikTok user wrote.

“Apparently washing your dishes is just for rich people now,” another joked.

In the second video, the content creator revealed that they had received a “disciplinary review” for sharing the first round of price changes.

In this video, the TikToker revealed the price hikes for cheese and dishwashing tablets, with cheese going from $13 to $14.95 and $19 16-pack of dishwashing tablets rising to 26 bucks.

It is not known exactly when these TikToks were recorded. Regardless, shoppers are pissed off, with some commenters thanking the content creator for sharing the videos.

Coles responds to viral TikToks that seemingly show in-store price hikes

Following the video’s virality, a spokesperson for Coles told 9News: “In response to higher inflation, we have seen a greater number of cost price increase request from suppliers.”

“While we try to keep our prices competitive, some of these price increases are passed on to customers,” they continued.

The supermarket giant also noted that the videos did not contain price reductions on products and has defended the changes as “standard practice”, per the publication.

The viral videos surfaced after the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission confirmed it was taking Coles and Woolworths to court over price gouging allegations.

The move has seen the support of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who’s slammed the supermarket giants, describing the alleged behaviour as “completely unacceptable”.
