Coldest night of the year recorded in Nottinghamshire as temperatures drop to -7.8C

Nottinghamshire recorded its coldest night of the year - as temperatures dropped to -7.8C. This was recorded by the Met Office at Sutton Bonington on Wednesday evening (December 14).

Weather officials confirmed this made it the coldest night of the year for Nottinghamshire, surpassing a -4C reading in Sutton Bonington back in January. The all-time low officially recorded in Nottinghamshire was taken in February 1947 when temperatures dropped to -17.8C in the same location.

Benson in Oxfordshire recorded the lowest temperature in England overnight on Wednesday at -12.9C. Across the UK, the coldest temperature of the year was recorded in Braemar, in Aberdeenshire, where there were lows of -17.3C on Tuesday (December 13).

It came as heavy snow hit Scotland and thousands of homes were left without power after snow and ice stuck to power lines and caused them to fail. Elsewhere in Nottinghamshire, the second lowest temperature on Wednesday evening was recorded at Gringley on the Hill, near Retford, at -4.5C. And there were lows of -4.2C recorded at Watnall Weather Station.

But fortunately the cold snap is expected to make way for warmer weather from over the weekend. Forecasters expect temperatures to reach 4C on Saturday (December 17) in Nottingham, with sunny intervals from lunchtime. It's likely to be a fraction warmer on Sunday but cloudy spells are likely to turn to sleet. A wider yellow weather warning for snow and ice is also in place from 3am to 9pm on Sunday which covers parts of the north of the county.

Monday has been predicted to be overcast with some spells of rain across the city. Forecasters expect highs of 13C and lows of 7C, significantly higher than the below freezing temperatures that have been experienced in early December.
