Britain is braced for a cold snap with temperatures plummeting and even the risk of snow in some places. Forecasters suggest snow showers could fall in northern parts of Scotland in the coming days with wet and windy weather hitting many parts of the UK.
The prediction comes as a bout of unsettled conditions look set to sweep across much of the country. - with no real signs of any prolonged autumn warmth.
Forecaster Brian Gaze, of The Weather Outlook, stated: "Thicker cloud brings a risk of rain at times as the weekend closes in. Tonight and tomorrow things begin to change as a band of rain pushes south-eastwards.
"Through Friday it becomes slow moving and it may not clear from the south east until Saturday. Early next week it turns notably chilly for late Septembers as a plunge of Arctic air sweeps south.
"Saturday is looking mixed. Showers are likely in southern and central areas, with the possibility of longer spells of rain in the south east. There could also be showers in Northern Ireland and northern Scotland. Other areas stay mostly dry. Temperatures close to the seasonal average."
He added: "Early next week a band of rain clears southwards and it turns a lot colder. Showery conditions develop and over high ground in the north some of them may fall as sleet or snow. In areas where cloudy conditions persist it could be particularly chilly for late September."
The Met Office forecast for Friday until Sunday, states: "Rain, heavy in places slow to clear the south Friday. Elsewhere a good deal of dry weather and the odd shower. Wet and windy weather reaching the north on Sunday."
