Coffee shop and takeaway slammed by health inspectors

Another two Liverpool venues have been hit with poor ratings by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

Inspections carried out by Liverpool Council officers on behalf of the FSA have given a dim view of Little Mo’s takeaway on Park Road, Toxteth, and NOMAD coffee shop on Smithdown Road. Both venues have been slapped with one out of five rating by inspectors, deeming they are in need of major improvement.

The low ratings are the latest in a series of poor scores for takeaways and restaurants across Liverpool, as two other pizza locations were hit with similar scores in February and March while two sites in Anfield and Warbreck came in for criticism from environmental health officials. However a restaurant in Garston that received a zero rating last month has been able to turn around its fortunes in just a matter of weeks.

Officers felt major improvement was required in the management of food safety at both NOMAD and Little Mo’s, specifically around the system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future. According to the publicly available information released by the FSA, improvement is required at both locations with regards to the cleanliness and condition of facilities and buildings.

Further improvement is required at Little Mo’s around its hygienic food handling according to officers, including hygienic handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage. On its website, Little Mo’s encourages patrons to try the Chef's Special Pizza or Crunchy Fried Chicken Wrap.

NOMAD’s performance in this area was said to be generally satisfactory. It uses its Facebook page to advertise its breakfast and coffee options.

Both venues were visited by inspectors last month. The ECHO approached Little Mo’s for a response to the reports but has yet to receive comment.

A spokesperson for NOMAD said that while the report was "a knock" all the findings have been rectified and inspectors had focused primarily on the layout of the building and the need for an on-site dishwasher. "All their remarks have since been rectified and we're waiting for the next inspection," they added.

Should either venue seek to challenge the ratings by the FSA, they are able to appeal the decision.
