Cody Gakpo 'waiting for transfer' but Liverpool may face problem with deal

Former PSV Eindhoven technical director John de Jong has explained how Cody Gakpo is keen on a move to Manchester United amid links with Liverpool.

The Reds have recently been credited with an interest in the forward, who is currently starring at the World cup for the Netherlands. Gakpo has scored two goals in his opening two fixtures in the competition in Qatar.

Gakpo’s form is likely to see interest in his services increase after the World Cup. During the summer transfer window, as the likes of Man United, Leeds and other clubs have been credited with an interest in him, as well as Liverpool.

Now fresh links with Liverpool have emerged, the topic of Gakpo’s future is up for discussion again - but there may be a problem for all but one club. De Jong has claimed that while there were other offers from the Premier League, it’s Man United who interested the player most.

“Cody has been waiting a long time for the transfer to Manchester United and it seemed to be coming,” De Jong told Dutch news outlet NOS on Sunday, via the Mail Online.

“A week before the end of the transfer window that fell through. After that he had two options in the Premier League, but you never know how that will turn out.

“He made the choice himself. In the end I did have a discussion with the board, whether or not to sell. I think it is really better for him that he stayed.

“I think it’s very nice how he is developing. He continues the line he started at PSV this season

“He is very effective and decisive. Also at the World Cup. I really enjoy watching it. It is especially great for Cody Gakpo that he is doing so well, but ultimately also for PSV and Dutch football.”
